Alert #018 – MS Web Apps Idle Session Timeout

MS 365 ALERT

# 018 – 10/16/2024

TITLE:

Microsoft Web Apps Idle Session Timeout
ALERT: On October 23, 2024, Idle Session Timeout for Microsoft Web Apps will be set for two (2) hours.  This setting will unify timeout across multiple Microsoft 365 Web Apps:

  • Outlook Web App (OWA)
  • One Drive
  • SharePoint
  • Microsoft365.com and other start pages (landing page)
  • Microsoft 365 web apps Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Microsoft Power BI (a.k.a. Microsoft Fabric)

Idle Session Timeout helps protect sensitive data and adds another layer of security.

ACTION:

No action is required.  The 2-hour idle session timeout for MS Web Apps will begin on October 23, 2024.  When you have been inactive in a MS 365 Web App for 2+ hours, your will get the following prompt:

You must select “Stay signed in” or you will be signed out.

For further Clarification:

  • Idle Session Timeout only applies to the Microsoft Web Apps mentioned above.
  • Idle Session Timeouts work on a per-browser session basis.  For example, if you are actively working in OWA using the Google Chrome browser but inactive for 2+ hours using a MS Web App in Microsoft Edge browser, the MS Web App(s) open in Edge will time out.
  • As long as you are actively (e.g., keystrokes or mouse clicks) working in one MS Web App tab (say OWA), other MS Web Apps open (say Word Online) in other tabs will not time out (per browser).
  • The 2-hour Idle Session Timeout corresponds with the ID.delaware.gov session limit.
  • NOTE: The MS Teams web app is not on the list; it will not encounter an idle timeout. Therefore, if you are active in the Teams web app but idle in other MS web apps, the 2-hour idle time will apply only to the other MS web apps that are open in that browser.
